For Alexa von Tobel, ambition has never been about playing it safe. The entrepreneur and venture capitalist has built her career on following instincts that others might have dismissed—dropping out of business school at the height of a financial crisis, creating a personal finance startup before “fintech” was a buzzword, and now backing founders who dare to take big, unconventional swings.

Early Lessons in Empathy and Hustle

Growing up in Florida, Alexa’s earliest exposure to work came through her father, a pediatrician who cared for children with developmental challenges. Watching him taught her that true success starts with paying attention to people beyond their words—reading gestures, energy, and presence.

That attention to detail carried over into her own childhood ventures. Unlike kids who ran lemonade stands, Alexa once tried selling her mother’s needlepoint off the walls to fund her gymnastics leotards. It was a glimpse of the entrepreneurial spark that would later define her career.

Money, Loss, and the Drive for Control

Money wasn’t a taboo topic in her household. Her father regularly showed her real financial accounts, teaching her how savings grew and why long-term planning mattered. But when he passed away suddenly while she was a teenager, her mother had to take control of the family’s finances on her own. That experience left Alexa determined to help other families feel financially empowered—an idea that ultimately became the foundation for LearnVest, her first company.

Choosing Risk Over Regret

At Harvard, Alexa studied psychology and worked on a project that explored what people regretted most at the end of life. The finding was clear: most people didn’t lament their failures—they regretted the chances they never took. That realization pushed her to adopt an inner mentor she calls “90-year-old Alexa,” a voice reminding her to pursue bold ideas without waiting for perfect timing.

That philosophy guided her in 2008 when she made a life-altering decision. Just a semester into Harvard Business School, she walked away to focus on LearnVest. The economy was collapsing, investors were cautious, and the odds were stacked against her—but she went all in.

From Startup Skepticism to Major Exit

LearnVest began as a tool to help people manage money with confidence, but the road wasn’t smooth. Alexa often faced doubts from industry veterans and even endured moments of public skepticism at startup conferences. Still, she kept building.

In 2015, her perseverance paid off when Northwestern Mutual acquired LearnVest for $375 million. She then joined the company’s leadership as Chief Digital Officer and later Chief Innovation Officer, driving efforts to modernize financial services.

Inspired Capital: Backing Bold Founders

After exiting LearnVest, Alexa turned her focus to venture capital. With co-founder Penny Pritzker, she launched Inspired Capital, a firm built on the belief that the most transformative companies are started by founders willing to take “near-impossible swings.” Unlike traditional VC models where entrepreneurs are tied to one main partner, Inspired Capital operates as a collective, offering founders access to a full team of investors and advisors.

Amplifying Ideas Through Storytelling

Beyond investing, Alexa is also amplifying entrepreneurial voices through her podcast, Inspired with Alexa von Tobel. Each episode features conversations with founders who are trying to reshape industries or solve problems in fresh ways. For her, storytelling is not just about highlighting success—it’s about reminding listeners that optimism and action can fuel real change.

Living Without Regrets

Looking back, Alexa’s career is defined less by strategy and more by courage: the courage to take leaps when logic suggested otherwise, to build companies around ideas others overlooked, and to trust that the biggest risks are often the ones most worth taking.

Her message is simple but powerful: don’t wait. The opportunities you pursue today, even when they feel daunting, are the ones that keep your future self free of regret.
